Presidents from 40 universities will be participating from both countries. The presidents will discuss the roles, innovation, and changes of the universities with respect to the beginning of the era of Asia. \"Whereas the 20th century was the one of the Atlantic, Europe and the West, the 21st century will be the era of the Pacific, Asia and the East. Simple waiting will not lead Asia to reach the center of the world. Specially, it is obvious that the 21st century will be an intelligence-based society. Universities should have the initiative of leading the era of Asia.” In order to participate in the 3rd Korea-China University Presidents Forum, the 40 top- tier university presidents from the both countries will convene at Yeungnam University in June of 2011. President Hyo Soo Lee of Yeungnam University gives a keynote speech at the 2nd China-Korea University Presidents Forum at Jilin University, China The main theme of the 3rd forum is \"Roles, Innovation and Change of the Universities in China and Korea for the Beginning of the Era of Asia\". In the keynote speech of the 2nd China-Korea Presidents Forum held at Jilin University, Changchun, China in June of 2010, Dr. Hyo Soo Lee, President of Yeungnam University, emphasized the necessity of multilateral interchanges and cooperation among universities in China and Korea beyond traditional bilateral ones. He also delivered the message that an increase of economic aspects does not mean stepping forward to the center of the world in the intelligence-based society of the 21st century. In order to make things happen, 20 universities from the 985 Project of China are supposed to join the forum and meet with the top-tier 20 Korean universities. The purpose of the project is to promote the Chinese higher education system under the call of President Jiang Zemin in May of 1998. Therefore, it is anticipated that this forum will be a cornerstone of the international, intercontinental era beyond the typical, stereotyped collaboration of the universities in China and Korea. President Lee also states that, “The era of Asia will finally be coming to us once the things in Science, Literature and Ideology are all set up”, and “when a tremendous wave of ‘the Big West and the small East’ occupied, the East did nothing at all in the late 19th century, but the Asia will be playing a pivotal role by having the initiative of innovation and changes in the 21st century. The 3rd forum at Yeungnam University will be a momentous occasion, proclaiming the commencement of the era of Asia by the people of Asia and for the people of Asia.” Dr. Hyo Soo Lee, President of Yeungnam University, Korea meets with Dr. Hao Ping, Vice Minister of Education, Ministry of Education, China at the 2nd China-Korea University Presidents Forum at Jilin University, China The Korea-China University Presidents Forum was first commenced for the commemoration of the 15th anniversary of the establishment of Korea-China diplomatic ties, and co-hosted by the Chinese Ministry of Education and the Korean Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. We have now passed the \'age of global competition\' and are entering the \'age of global cooperation\'. At its center stands the Republic of Korea. As to prove this, the G20 summits came to Seoul to exchange ideas for international economic cooperation such as in exchange rate policies, and now, global figures have come to Yeungnam University to search for ways for international cooperation in the solar energy sector. Yeungnam University (president Lee, Hyo-soo) proclaimed the start of the new age of global cooperation after making an agreement with establishing the GGECN (Global Green Energy Cluster Network) to connect Korea, US, France, Germany and Australia in the afternoon of the 16th at the Chunma Arts Center Chamber Hall. Lee, Hyo-soo, who was the keynote speaker, emphasized in his speech titled, \'GIFT plan & GGECN for Sustainable Green Growth\', that the entire world must come together to develop environment-friendly green energy in order to overcome the crisis of mankind caused by climate-change as soon as possible. In particular, he presented the three directions of \'development of new technologies for environment-friendly green energy\', \'energy saving technology development in existing industrial fields\', and \'innovation of energy saving consumption\' for the \'GIFT Plan\', and proposed international cooperation for the future of humankind. This also meant what the global cooperation network must aim for in the green energy sector as well. President Lee stated, \"With the construction of the GGECN, we now lay the cornerstone for the GIFT plan, and information exchange and research cooperation in the green energy sector will be possible from a global aspect.\" He added, \"Yeungnam University\'s GIFT plan will be a big gift not only for the future, but for today\'s world as well. While introducing the three directions in the green innovation sector, which has been promoted by Yeungnam University for the future of humanity, Lee, Hyo-soo also proposed to open up the age of global cooperation in his keynote speech. Institutes participating in the GGECN are core institutes that have already led the research and industries of the solar energy sector in their respective nations. In Korea, centering on Yeungnam University\'s Institute of Solar Energy Research, Solar Cell/Module Materials and Process Regional Innovation Center, and the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Economic Belt Green Energy Education & Research Center, Gyeongsangbuk-do, the Gyeongbuk Technopark, Daegu-Gyeongbuk Leading Industry Development for Economic Region, and the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Regional Energy Climate Change Center, as well as the foreign-invested company ISET (International Solar Electric Technology) will be participating. From the US are participating FESC (Florida Energy Systems Consortium), University Center of Excellence for Photovoltaics Research and Education at Georgia Tech, and CRSP (Center for Revolutionary Solar Photoconversion). InESS (Institute of Electronics for Solids and Systems) of France, and TÜV Rheinland of Germany, and University of New South Wales of Australia join in the network. They aimed at agreeing to make collaborative efforts for effective research and education in green energy sectors such as solar energy, hydro-energy, wind energy, geothermal heat, bio-mass, atomic energy, etc, and establishing sustainable development policies, while making representative communication channels from the respective countries. Accordingly, Yeungnam University and Gyeongsangbuk-do became not only the center for green energy in Korea, but debuted in the international stage as the center of global cooperation. Yeungnam University will play a role in connecting companies, institutes, research centers and universities of the domestic green energy sector with that of the US, France, Germany and Australia. In addition, it will play the role of brokering domestic consulting of world-renowned scholars in the green energy sector. As part of this, Yeungnam University is planning to drive the details of the private collaboration with InESS of France. InESS is a world-class green energy research institute located in Alsace, France, which has a sister-relationship with Gyeongsangbuk-do, and it is within the University of Strasbourg, which is also a sister-university of Yeungnam University. The US FESC, CRSP, UCEP, and Australia\'s UNSW also promised student exchange programs, joint research, and Shared-use of solar cell manufacturing pilot lines. FESC is the world\'s largest solar energy consortium that is combined with companies, colleges and research centers in the solar energy sector in Florida. CRSP is a consortium in Colorado with members such as the US NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) which is recognized as a world-class green energy research center. In addition, by the agreement which has also been made with Germany\'s TÜV Rheinland Yeungnam University will directly operate the world-class solar cell module international certification and evaluation center from 2011. Furthermore, it agreed to cooperate in attracting foreign investments with the US ISET to promote the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region\'s CIS thin film solar cell industry. Thus, through the establishment of the fusion research paradigm, Yeungnam University has got a green light for \'Green Innovation\', which is one of the \'Global Frontier 10-3-10\', which is the university\'s goal to become one of the top 10 universities in 3 research areas within 10 years. I am learning the \'beauty of slowness\' here in Korea during my summer break.\" He added, \"I would like to come to Yeungnam University as an exchange student during a regular school term and really learn about Korea.\" Gharbi Mohamed (30), who majors in business administration at the University of Tunis, stated, \"Interest of Korea has probably risen in Africa because of the World Cup in South Africa,\" and added, \"I will enroll in Korean language courses at Yeungnam University from the fall semester, and I hope that in the long-run I can contribute in promoting interchange between Korea and Africa.\" Meanwhile, the Yeungnam University School of International Studies, which offers summer school programs for the first time this year, is planning to expand them in the future so that more foreign students from more countries can have the opportunity to learn about Korea.

Team from Isfahan University of Technology in Iran joins the \'Baja SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) KOREA at Yeungnam University\' First appearance in international competition, scheduled to participate in event in South Africa 3 months later also [July 7, 2010] “We prepared very hard for the past year for this event, but we aren\'t thinking too much about the results. What\'s more important to us is that we do our best so that we have no regrets and that we make friends with university students around the world. At the automobile engineering student festival, we\'ll have fun.\" On the morning of the 7th at the plant lab of Yeungnam University. The IUT team (photo) of the Isfahan University of Technology are working hard from early in the morning. After finally checking the vehicle that arrived late last night, they will be participate in the Baja SAE Korea at Yeungnam University that will be held from the afternoon on this day until the 10th. IUT is the KAIST of Iran. It is a university geared to the engineering sector and is located approximately 400km from the capital, Tehran. They decided to participate in the event after finding out that it would be held at Yeungnam University from the US SAE homepage last summer, but there were many obstacles to overcome. The biggest obstacle was the financial issue. Not to mention the cost to manufacture a vehicle, but the round trip airfares and cost to transport the vehicle were quite expensive. After soliciting a number of companies, they received financial support from the well-known Iranian oil refinery companies Nargan and North Drilling Company. The IUT team focused mainly on the suspension system for their vehicle. Because there is an offroad race, it absorbed shock from the road to minimize fatigue of the driver and controls irregular motion of the vehicle when driving on severely bumpy surfaces through increasing the tire grip for better control to enhance its driving power and braking power. Thus, they have strong confidence in the dynamic test that inspects the vehicle\'s braking power, traction power, control power, etc as well as in endurance race in which the track must be completed in 3 and a half hours. The team\'s leader Mortez (23) stated, \"It is not common for university students to receive support from a company in Iran to participate in an international event, so it was very difficult for us to find sponsors. But, after continuously persuading them without giving up they pledged their support to us beyond our expectation,\" and added, \"We will do our best until the end for those who trusted and supported us.\" Another hurdle to overcome was that they never experienced international competitions. The only experience is that their upperclassmen participated in an international competition five years ago in South Africa. Thus, for the past year the 6 mechanical engineering students, 1 industrial engineering student and 1 material engineering student came together as a team of pioneers and had to learn for theirselves and gain experience from A to Z. Dr. Mohsen Esfahanian (46), who guided these students, stated, \"We had to overcome many trials-and-errors to join this event in Korea, but I am very proud of the students who solved and overcame every problem.\" He also added, \"One thing I would like to tell my students is to be willing to learn at all times wherever they are, and I hope they can enjoy this experience, regardless of the results.\" The IUT team is planning to take another challenge in the Republic of South Africa in the coming October using the experience from this event. On another note, the participation of the team from Iran is giving as a fresh impetus to domestic teams. Team leader Lee, Si-mok (24, Junior, Major of Mechanical System) of Yeungnam University \'Chunma DM\', which is a veteran team that participated in this event for the past 15 years and won on several occasions, stated, \"The fact that friends from foreign countries to take part in this competition is heating things up,\" adding, \"We will play fair so that they can go back to their home countries with good memories of Korea.\" The Baja SAE Korea at Yeungnam University, which is hosted by Yeungnam University, has been hosted for the past 15 years, and it will be held at the Yeungnam University Gyeongsan campus until July 10. 56 teams from Korea and abroad will compete in this event, and the first place winner will receive the Minister of Knowledge Economy Award, winner\'s flag and a trophy. Results of the event will be announced worldwide through the official homepage of SAE (www.sae.org) and through various publications. <Photo> The IUT team and Chunma DM team are making final checks at the plant lab.
